How To Paint A Black Cat

Today we’re learning how to paint a black cat and it’s especially for our younger artists!

The art supplies you’ll need for this activity are:

  • Paint (we used acrylics but you can use any)
  • Paper (we used orange construction paper)
  • Paint brushes
  • Paint tray (or plate)
  • Water
  • Paper towels

The steps for this activity are very simple, but we did introduce a slightly more advanced step. Usually we’ll paint the eyes and nose after (and on top of) the head. This time we painted the eyes and nose first and then painted the head around them. This method creates natural boundaries for our young artists to be aware of. Ultimately, this helps them develop better brush control as they paint inside of a shape (the head) and not on other shapes (eyes and nose).

Also, encourage your young artists to practice painting this cat a couple times. See if they can eventually do it from memory.
