Happy Lunar New Year, art friends! Today we’re drawing the legendary Nian monster. According to Chinese mythology, Nian is a scary creature who used to terrorize villages every New Year, until the people discovered he was afraid of the color red, loud noises, and fire. That’s how the traditions of firecrackers and red decorations started!

Our version of Nian is way more cute than scary, so this is a great one for all ages. Try making yours look fierce, friendly, or somewhere in between; there’s no wrong way to draw a monster! You can also add some red lanterns or firecrackers in the background to set the scene.
